# Assistants and Agents

Choose, configure, and understand the capabilities of each destination.

## Assistant versus Agent

An Assistant is the destination you choose in Orylo. It can use a local tool-capable Agent, a custom ACP/CLI command, or a configured model provider. Agent Assistants can expose workspaces, tools, permission requests, session restore, and file changes.

## Discovery and readiness

Orylo safely discovers supported local executables when the app starts and when you explicitly rescan. It displays the resolved executable and connection status in Settings. Sending never runs a package downloader or an unknown shell command.

## Defaults

- Choose one default Assistant for new conversations.
- Set a default workspace per Assistant when it uses project context.
- Configure model, reasoning, permission, and collaboration options only when the connected Agent advertises them.
- Assistant instructions apply to new Sessions; active Sessions keep the snapshot they started with.

## Custom Agents

A custom Agent uses an explicit local command. Orylo validates the command and keeps it separate from built-in adapters. Feature labels remain based on the capabilities the connection reports.
